NASA’s LCRD Communication System
Recently, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its new Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD). It is the agency’s first-ever laser communications system.
Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD)
- The Atlas V (an expendable launch system) launched the US Department of Defense’s Space Test Program Satellite 6 (STPSat-6) which carried the LCRD payload.
- It is the first-ever laser communications system that will pave the way for future optical communications missions.
- As of now, most NASA spacecraft use radio frequency communications to send data.
- It will be in a geosynchronous orbit, over 35,000km above Earth.
- For the first two years, LCRD will test its communications capabilities. ....
