Threat of Invasive Alien Species: Economic and Ecological Implications
Invasive alien species (IAS) pose significant threats to ecosystems and economies worldwide. They are species introduced, either intentionally or unintentionally, to regions outside their native range, where they establish, spread, and cause harm to the environment, human health, and the economy.
Ecological Implications
- Biodiversity Loss: IAS outcompete native species for resources such as food, water, and habitat, leading to the decline or extinction of indigenous flora and fauna. They can alter habitat structures and ecosystem functions, affecting species that depend on these habitats.
