Overview of Agriculture Sector in India

• India ranks first, with 179.8 million hectare (Mha) (9.6 percent of the global net cropland area) of net cropland area.
• The growth rates of agriculture & allied sectors have been fluctuating at 1.5 per cent in 2012-13, 5.6 per cent in 2013-14, (-) 0.2 per cent in 2014-15, 0.7 per cent in 2015-16 and 4.9 per cent in 2016-17.

Crop Production

• During 2017-18, food grain production is estimated at record 284.83 million tonnes(mt). In 2018-19, Government of India is targeting food grain production of 285.2 mt.
