Invasive Species in India

  • Invasive alien species (IAS) are animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms that are introduced to an environment outside of their natural habitat.
  • They can be introduced accidentally or deliberately. IAS can cause serious negative consequences for their new environment.
  • They can reproduce rapidly, out-compete native species for food, water, and space, and are one of the main causes of global biodiversity loss.
  • According to a 2023 UNEP report, the severe global threat posed by invasive alien species is underappreciated, underestimated, and often unacknowledged.
