EU Launches Naval Mission to Protect Red Sea Shipping
On 19th February, 2024, in response to repeated attacks on shipping by Yemen's Houthi rebels, the European Union has initiated a naval mission aimed at safeguarding Red Sea trade routes.
- The EU's mission, dubbed Aspides, meaning "shield" in Greek, aims to ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and protect civilian shipping from Houthi attacks.
- European Commission President emphasized the importance of collaboration with international partners to secure Red Sea trade routes.
- The Houthis, who control significant portions of Yemen, have intensified their campaign against shipping since November, citing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas conflict. ....
