India added 557 New Species in 2020
The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has released a document titled ‘Animal Discoveries 2020’. The report describes new species discovered in India. The document is being published by ZSI since 2007.
Key Findings
- In 2020, India added 557 new species to its fauna. This includes 407 new species and 150 new records. With this addition, the faunal diversity in India has risen to around 1.02 lakh species.
- Among the new species discovered, invertebrates constitute the majority (486 species) as compared to vertebrates (71 species). Insects dominated the most among the invertebrates, whereas pisces and reptiles dominated among the vertebrates.
