Tsunami Ready Village

  • On 7th August, 2020, two coastal villages of Odisha- Venkatraipur village in Ganjam district and Noliasahi village in Jagatsingpur district were declared “Tsunami Ready” by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (UNESCO-IOC) for their overall preparedness to face the calamity.
  • With this recognition, India became the first country to implement the Tsunami programme in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Also, Odisha became the first Indian state to do so and now is it is expected to become a role model for Tsunami preparedness in India.

Criteria for Recognition

  1. Community tsunami risk reduction plan
  2. Designated and mapped tsunami hazard zones
  3. Public display of tsunami information
  4. Easily understood ....
