New Alternative to Address the Problem of Single-use Plastic
Recently, scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, have found a way to make a substitute for single-use plastic (SUP) that could help mitigate the problem of accumulating plastic waste in the environment.
The Research
- The researchers developed polymers using non-edible castor oil and cellulose extracted from agricultural stubble.
- Process: Non-edible Castor oil was made to react with the cellulose and di-isocyanate compound. All precursors are mixed in toluene solvent and heated. Then the solution mixture is spread on a teflon sheet. After 12 hours, polyurethane sheet is obtained.
