Justice Uday Umesh Lalit: 49th CJI of India

On 10th August 2022, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the 49th Chief Justice of India. He will take over the charge on 27th August, 2022.
- The present CJI Justice N V Ramana will retire on 26th August.
- Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed as Judge of the Supreme Court of India in August 2014.
- Justice Lalit is the 6th senior advocate ever to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court.
- He will retire on 8 November 2022 after assuming the office of Chief Justice of India for a period of seventy four days.
