Poonam Gupta Appointed Deputy Governor of RBI

On 2nd April 2025, the Central Government appointed Poonam Gupta, Director General of NCAER, as the new Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, replacing MD Patra who demitted office in January.

  • Approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), Gupta will serve a three-year term from the date of joining.
  • Holds a PhD and Master’s in Economics from the University of Maryland, and a Master's from the Delhi School of Economics.
  • Has taught at Delhi School of Economics, University of Maryland, ISI Delhi, and was the RBI Chair Professor at NIPFP.
  • Member of the PM’s Economic Advisory Council, Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission, and Board Member of NIPFP and GDN.
  • Worked for nearly two decades in senior roles at the IMF and World Bank in Washington, DC.
