Legendary Chess Grandmaster Boris Spassky Passes Away

On 27th February 2025, Russian chess grandmaster Boris Spassky, the 10th World Chess Champion, has passed away at the age of 88, as confirmed by FIDE general director Emil Sutovsky.

Spassky held the World Chess Championship title from 1969 to 1972, before losing to Bobby Fischer in the historic “Match of the Century” during the Cold War.
Spassky became a French citizen in 1978 and remained an influential figure in global chess.
His legacy as a chess innovator, sportsman, and mentor remains a vital part of chess history.
