Security Review of Indian Missions
- 10 Feb 2025
In February 2025, a parliamentary panel recommended that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) conduct a comprehensive security assessment of all Indian diplomatic missions and posts, considering geopolitical threats and vulnerabilities.
Key Recommendations
- Security of Indian Missions: The Committee on External Affairs emphasized the need for continuous security reviews and adequate resource allocation for physical and digital infrastructure protection.
- Expansion of Diplomatic Presence: India currently lacks resident missions in 42 countries. The panel urged accelerated efforts to establish missions, especially in nations with strategic, economic, or diaspora significance.
- New Defence Attachés in Africa: The MEA is set to deploy additional Defence Attachés to African nations to enhance strategic ties.
- New Diplomatic Missions: India is operationalizing new missions in Fukuoka (Japan), Kazan (Russia), Yekaterinburg (Russia), and planning five more in Europe and Latin America.
- Funding Stability: The panel stressed that budgetary fluctuations undermine India’s diplomatic credibility, urging consistent financial allocations for embassies and missions.
