Madhya Pradesh (MP) is set to translocate 14 tigers to Rajasthan, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh as part of an animal exchange programme.

Key Points

  • Translocation Plan: Under the animal exchange programme, Madhya Pradesh will send four tigers to Rajasthan, two to Odisha, and eight to Chhattisgarh, with the transfer of the big cats from tiger reserves in Bandhavgarh, Panna, Kanha, and Pench.
  • Veterinary Supervision: The translocation process will be conducted under the supervision of an authorised veterinarian to ensure the safety of the tigers and tigresses during their relocation.
  • Expenditure Responsibility: The states receiving the tigers will bear the entire cost of the translocation, which will also require mandatory approval from the Centre.
  • Previous Animal Exchange: Recently, Madhya Pradesh sent two Bengal tigers from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve to Gujarat under the exchange programme, and also received two Asiatic lions from Gujarat, which have been placed in quarantine at Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal.
  • Tiger Conservation Leadership: Madhya Pradesh remains the 'Tiger State' with over 785 tigers across six tiger reserves, including Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Panna, Pench, Sanjay Dubri, and Satpura, continuing to lead the country's tiger conservation efforts.
