In March 2025, a faunal survey conducted in Kerala’s youngest protected area, Karimpuzha Wildlife Sanctuary, reported 63 new species of odonates, butterflies, and birds. This was the first systematic biodiversity assessment since its designation as a sanctuary in 2020.

- New Species Discoveries: The survey documented 41 new odonate species, six new butterfly species, and 16 bird species previously unrecorded in the region.
- Expanding Bird Count: Notable sightings include the Eurasian Sparrow Hawk, White-Rumped Vulture, Blue-eared Kingfisher, and Broad-tailed Grassbird, bringing the total bird species count to 239.
- Butterfly Diversity: The sanctuary now hosts 263 butterfly species, including new additions like the Suffused Double Banded Judy and Painted Courtesan.
- Odonate Checklist Update: Significant discoveries include Gomphidia kodaguensis and Rhyothemis triangularis, increasing the odonate count to 58 species.
- Other Faunal Highlights: The survey recorded 141 moth species, four cicada species, 38 ant species, five bee species, and four fish species. Large mammals such as elephants, Nilgiri Tahrs, tigers, and leopards were also observed.
