On 3rd December 2024, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister approved five capital acquisition proposals to bolster India’s coastal and aerial defence capabilities.

Key Points

  • Water Jet Fast Attack Craft: AoN granted for 31 new Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts for the Indian Navy. These will perform low-intensity maritime operations, patrol, and anti-piracy missions near coastal and island territories.
  • Fast Interceptor Craft: Approval for 120 Fast Interceptor Crafts to escort high-value units like aircraft carriers, destroyers, and submarines for enhanced coastal defence.
  • Electronic Warfare Suite (EWS): Procurement of advanced systems, including jammer pods and radar warning receivers for Su-30MKI aircraft, to improve operational capabilities and protection against enemy air defence systems.
  • Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH): Six marine-role ALHs for the Coast Guard to strengthen coastal security and surveillance.
  • Asset Overhaul: Approval for overhauling T-72 and T-90 tanks, BMPs, and Sukhoi fighter aircraft engines, extending their operational service life.
