Government Restores Recruitment of Railway Officers
- 07 Oct 2024
On 5th October, 2024, the Union government reinstated the recruitment of railway officers through both the Civil Services Examination (CSE) and the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), reversing the 2019 decision to recruit officers solely through CSE.
Key Points
- Reversal of 2019 Policy: After a four-year pause, the recruitment of Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) officers will now take place via both CSE and ESE, restoring the previous system.
- Challenges in Recruitment: The 2019 policy caused difficulties in finding suitable officers for technical departments like Engineering, Mechanical, and Electrical.
- Restoration of Engineering Intake: This will enable the Indian Railways to better meet its technical staffing requirements, particularly in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Signal & Telecommunications departments.
- Unification of Railway Services: In 2019, the government had unified eight Group-A services into a single Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). This reform was aimed at ending departmentalism, promoting efficiency, and expediting decision-making within the Indian Railways.
- Upcoming Recruitment through ESE 2025: The Ministry of Telecommunications has notified the ESE-2025 Rules and has requested the inclusion of the Ministry of Railways for the recruitment of engineers under the IRMS banner.
- Recruitment will cover 225 posts across disciplines like Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
- Expanding Opportunities for Candidates: The revised recruitment rules offer engineering and non-engineering candidates equal opportunity for career progression, allowing the Railways to meet its staffing needs more effectively while providing ample opportunities for candidates to apply.
