  • 14 Apr 2025

On 14th April 2025, the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, introduced draft rules for gas meters under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, aimed at enhancing consumer protection and ensuring fair trade practices.

Key Points

  • Mandatory Testing and Stamping: India now requires all gas meters used for domestic, commercial, and industrial purposes to undergo testing, verification, and official stamping before they can be used in trade or commerce.
  • Periodic Re-verification: Gas meters already in use will be subject to periodic re-verification to ensure ongoing accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Consumer Safeguards: The rules are designed to protect consumers from overcharging, inaccurate readings, and billing disputes, ensuring transparency and fairness in metering.
  • Energy Efficiency Benefits: Standardized and accurate meters are expected to improve energy efficiency across the system while also reducing long-term maintenance costs.
  • Global Alignment: This regulatory framework aligns with international OIML standards and global best practices, strengthening India’s reputation in international trade.
  • Stakeholder Consultations: The drafting process incorporated expert inputs from IILM, RRSLs, BIS, industry leaders, and voluntary consumer organizations to ensure well-rounded and practical implementation.
  • Smooth Transition: Authorities have included a transition period to help the industry and regulatory bodies adapt to the new rules without disrupting gas supplies to consumers.
