Radar Speed Guns Must Be Verified Under New Govt Rules
- 19 Apr 2025
On 18th April 2025, the Centre mandated that all radar-based speed measurement devices be verified and stamped by legal metrology authorities to enhance fairness in traffic enforcement and road safety.
Key Points
- Mandatory Verification: From July 1, radar/laser speed guns must be certified under Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, to ensure accuracy and prevent erroneous fines.
- International Alignment: The new rules follow OIML R 91, a global standard ensuring devices are legally admissible and environmentally robust.
- Public Confidence Boost: Verified devices will reduce disputes over speeding tickets and build public trust in traffic enforcement.
- Strict Penalties: Under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, using unverified speed devices can lead to Rs. 25,000 fines or imprisonment for repeat offences.
- Impact on Manufacturers: Indian radar device makers gain clarity and can now align products to global export standards.
