  • 27 Aug 2024

In August 2024, three botany professors have discovered a new species of the Cleistanthus Collinus plant, named Cleistanthus Deekshabhoomiana, during a taxonomic field exploration in Ambagad forest, Bhandara district. This marks the 135th species of Cleistanthus Collinus globally and the 9th found in India.

Key Points

  • Significance of Cleistanthus Deekshabhoomiana: Cleistanthus Deekshabhoomiana is the 9th Cleistanthus Collinus species found in India and the 6th that is endemic to the country. It has been named after Deekshabhoomi, an important heritage site in Nagpur.
  • Ecological Observations: The species was found growing in the hilly, dry deciduous forest of Ambagad village, with its flowering season beginning in February and fruiting from March to July. The plant acts as a natural biopesticide, as its fruits are avoided by birds and animals.
  • Conservation Efforts: The research team has established a seed bank for the species and is working on its conservation.
