Reintroduction of Vultures in Pench Tiger Reserve
- 12 Aug 2024
On 10th August, 2024, the Pench Tiger Reserve (PTR) and Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) successfully reintroduced critically endangered long-billed vultures into their natural habitat, marking a major achievement in wildlife conservation.
Key Points
- Reintroduction Efforts: The process began on 21 January with ten long-billed vultures transferred from the Jatayu Conservation & Breeding Center in Pinjore, Haryana.
- These vultures were kept in a pre-release aviary at the Bodalzira beat of East Pench Piparia Range for seven months to acclimate and interact with local vultures.
- Monitoring and Tracking: Each released vulture was fitted with GPS tags to monitor their movements and integration into the wild. This tracking will provide insights into their habitat use, distribution, and overall conservation status.
- Continued Efforts: The PTR and BNHS will continue to observe the vultures through these GPS tags to ensure their successful adaptation and contribute to broader conservation efforts.
