On 3rd August, 2024, renowned Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer Yamini Krishnamurti passed away at Apollo Hospital at the age of 84, following a prolonged battle with age-related issues.

  • Born on December 20, 1940, in Madanapalli, Andhra Pradesh, Krishnamurti began her dance training at the age of five under Rukmini Devi Arundale at Kalakshetra.
  • Apart from Bharatanatyam, Krishnamurti was also proficient in Kuchipudi and learned Odissi from Pankaj Charan Das and Kelucharan Mohapatra.
  • She was trained in Carnatic vocals and the veena, and received prestigious awards including the Padma Shri in 1968, Padma Bhushan in 2001, and Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
  • Veteran dancer Rama Vaidyanathan praised Krishnamurti for bringing "power, beauty, and glamour" to Bharatanatyam, recalling her relentless dedication to the art form.
  • Condolences have poured in from across the dance community, with tributes highlighting Krishnamurti's significant contributions and impact on Indian classical dance.
