Dr. B.N. Gangadhar: New Chairperson of NMC

On July 3rd, 2024, the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Dr. B N. Gangadhar as the Chairperson of National Medical Commission (NMC).

Key Points

  • He is a former director of NIMHANS, was also the president of the autonomous Medical Assessment and Rating Board.
  • The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet also appointed Dr Sanjay Behari, director of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram as President of Medical Assessment and Rating Board.
  • The appointments are for a period of 4 years, until the appointee attains the age of 70 years, or until further orders, whichever is earliest.

National Medical Commission

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has been constituted by an act of Parliament known as National Medical Commission Act, 2019 which came into force on 25th September 2020.

The Board of Governors in supersession of Medical Council of India constituted under section 3A of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 stands dissolved thereafter.
