- Designation announced by IAU's Working Group on Small Bodies Nomenclature on March 18.
- Asteroid discovered by M.W. Buie at Kitt Peak National Observatory in 2005.
- Named in recognition of Prof. Murthy's work on NASA's New Horizons Science Team.
- Prof. Murthy's research focuses on interstellar medium, ultraviolet astronomy, and space missions.
- He joins earlier IIA directors Prof. M.K. Vainu Bappu and Prof. J.C. Bhatacharyya, who have asteroids named after them.
