River Boards Act, 1956

It empowers the Central Government to establish River Boards for the regulation and development of inter-state rivers and river valleys.

Functions of the River Boards: It will advise the Governments in relation to-

  • conservation, control and optimum utilisation of water resources of the inter- State rivers
  • promotion and operation of schemes for irrigation, water supply or drainage
  • promotion and operation of schemes for the development of hydro-electric power
  • promotion and operation of schemes for flood control
  • promotion and control of navigation
  • promotion of afforestation and control of soil erosion
