Y. K. Alagh Committee (1979)

This committee was constituted by the Planning Commission in 1977 and submitted its report in 1979. Official poverty count began in India for the first time based on the approach of this committee.

  • Poverty Line: It defined Poverty line on the basis of per capita consumption expenditure level to meet average per capita daily calorie requirement of kcal per capita per day in rural areas.
  • Based on 1973-74 prices, it set the rural and urban poverty lines at Rs. 49.09 and Rs. 56.64 per capita per month.
