National Legal Services Authority (NALSA)

It was constituted in 1987 under Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 with the objective of providing free legal services to the weaker sections of the society.

  • The Chief Justice of India is the Patron-in-Chief and the senior most Honorable Judge, Supreme Court of India is the Executive Chairman of the Authority.

Functions

  • Organizing Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.
  • Spreading legal literacy and awareness.
  • Undertaking social justice litigations.
  • Identifying specific categories of the marginalized and excluded groups and formulating policies to implement preventive and strategic legal services programs.
