Justice Verma Commission on Teacher Education

It was setup by Supreme Court in 2011 post looking into the plight of poor skills amongst elementary teachers. The commission was asked to review teacher education in India and come up with reforms.

  • The commission recommended complete overhauling of teacher’s education system. Below are some specific recommendations of the commission:
    • It recommended increasing the investment in setting up of Teacher Education Institutes (TEIs).
    • A transparent procedure of Pre-Entry Testing of candidates to the Pre-service teacher education programmes must be constituted.
