ICAR is an autonomous organisation under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare.
It was established on 16th July 1929 as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. ICAR is headquartered in New Delhi and was formerly known as the ‘Imperial Council of Agricultural Research’.
With 71 agricultural universities across India, ICAR is the largest national agricultural education system in the world and has played a pioneer role in ensuring agricultural self-sufficiency in India by ushering in Green Revolution.

ICAR plans, coordinates and promotes research and technological development for sustainable agriculture.
