Indian Bureau of Mines was set up on 1st March, 1948. Initially IBM functioned purely as an advisory body.
Later, IBM was given a set of functions in 1950 and in accordance with it; the inspection of mines and mineral prospects became a regular activity.
In the present decade, with the change in the policy of Government, two very important activities were undertaken by IBM.
