The Medical Council of India has failed in the supervision of medical education and practice. Examine in the light of the recommended National Medical Commission Bill.

Answer: The medical education and practice in India had been under the supervision and control of Medical Council of India (MCI) which is an elected body of medical doctors. However, the MCI has been criticized for failing to address the issues affecting the medical education and practice.

Failure of MCI

  • There is an acute shortage of medical doctors in the country besides their geographical mal-distribution. The doctor - population ratio in India is 1:1674 as against the WHO norm of 1:1000.
