​ZSI and Odisha Forest Department Tag Horseshoe Crabs

In August 2024, the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the Odisha Forest Department initiated a project to tag horseshoe crabs along Odisha’s coast to assess their population and habitat use for better conservation and management.

  • In response to reports of a declining horseshoe crab population along the Odisha coast, scientists have tagged 70 crabs in a pioneering effort, marking the first tagging project of its kind in India.
  • India is home to two horseshoe crab species: Tachypleus gigas and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, found along the northeastern coast, particularly in Odisha and West Bengal; Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda is also present in the Sundarbans mangroves.
