Genome India Project: Strengthening the Healthcare System

  • India sequenced the human genome for the first time in 2006.
  • On 3rd January, 2020, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, launched the Genome India Project.
  • India’s 1.4 billion population comprises more than 4,600 population groups.
  • On February 27, 2024, DBT announced the completion of whole-genome sequencing and data analysis of 10,000 individuals from 99 diverse communities, representing all major linguistic and social groups.
