Khandagiri Udayagiri Caves

  • Recently, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has sealed the road between Khandagiri and Udaygiri caves to protect them from vibration stress from vehicular movement and pollution.
  • The twin hills of Khandagiri and Udayagiri were anciently known as Kumara and Kumari parvatas respectively.
  • It was built by the Kalinga Empire under the Jain emperor Kharavela in first century B.C.
  • Its construction was continued by Kharavela’s successor till the Empire of the Somavamsis of 10th -11th century A.D.
  • It consists of about 40 rock cut caves: 15 in Khandagiri and 18 in Udayagiri.
