Forest Conservation Act 1980

  • An Act to provide for the conservation of forests and for matters connected therewith or ancillary or incidental thereto.
  • The first statute on the subject was the Indian Forest Act, 1865. It was repealed and replaced by The Indian forest act, 1927. The present Act i.e. The Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 was passed with a view to check deforestation.
  • This act is regulatory in nature and not prohibitory.
  • The FCA is the principal legislation that regulates deforestation in the country. It prohibits the felling of forests for any “non-forestry” use without prior clearance by the central government.
