Bioplastics: Can they be a Solution to Plastic Pollution?
- Bioplastic means, these plastics are biodegradable. Unlike conventional plastics, these bioplastics can be broken down by microbes in industrial composting facilities within six months. This feature offers a partial but promising solution to the plastic problem.
- Polylactic acid (PLA) is one of the most common bioplastics in use. PLA is extracted from starch of food crops like corn and cassava.
- Polyhydroxyalkanoates or PHAs are another feedstock, synthesized by bacteria feeding on vegetable oils or sugars from food crops.
