Local Reservation in Private Sector
Constitutional Provisions: Article 16 guarantees equal treatment under law in matters of public employment & prohibit the state from discriminating on grounds of place of birth or residence.
Arguments in Favour of Local Reservation
- Local reservation protects the right to life/livelihood of people domiciled in the state.
- Shrinking employment presents a problem for states to provide employment, and owing to limited state’s capacity w.r.t. public employment, reservation of locals in private sector is necessary.
- Local reservation helps in curbing the selectively discriminating corporations as many companies are hesitant to hire local staff.
