US Directs NASA to Create Lunar Time Standard
Recently, the US White House instructed NASA to develop a time standard for the Moon, termed as Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC), by the end of 2026.
Why a Time Standard for the Moon is Necessary?
- Incompatibility with UTC: Unlike on Earth, Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) cannot be used on the Moon due to differences in the flow of time caused by gravity.
- Time Dilation: According to Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, time flows differently on the Moon due to its lower gravity, leading to a discrepancy of 58.7 microseconds per Earth Day.
- Operational Challenges: Discrepancies in time measurement can lead to issues ....
