Government has initiated steps to execute the four pilot coal gasification projects announced in Budget 2022-23.

About Coal Gasification

  • It is a process in which coal is partially oxidised with air, oxygen, steam or carbon dioxide to form a fuel gas.
  • It produces Syngas which is a mixture consisting primarily of methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour (H2O).

Benefits

  • Coal gasification is considered a cleaner option compared to burning of coal.
  • Syngas, produced from gasification, can be used to produce gaseous fuels such as hydrogen, substitute natural gas (SNG or Methane) and ....
