Redefining Mobility: Transforming Landscape of Transport Sector
- The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways was formed in 2009 by bifurcating the erstwhile Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways into two independent ministries.
- At present, India has about 62.16 lakh kilometer road network and in this context India ranks second in the world.
- The government envisages development of approximately 26,000 km long economic corridors under the 'Bharatmala Project'.
- The project also includes development of ring roads/bypasses and elevated corridors to reduce traffic passing through cities and increase logistics efficiency.
- The 'Green National Highway Corridor Project' (GNHCP) was launched in the year 2016.
