Japan's SLIM 'Moon Sniper' Achieves Lunar Orbit
On 26th December, 2023, Japan's quest to soft-land a spacecraft on the Moon entered a crucial phase as the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) confirmed the successful insertion of its "Smart Lander for Investigating Moon" (SLIM) into lunar orbit.
- Japan aims to join the elite group of countries capable of soft-landing a probe on the Moon, with SLIM's mission mirroring India's achievement with Chandrayaan-3 earlier this year.
- SLIM now orbits the Moon along an elliptical path connecting its south and north poles, with an orbit period of approximately 6.4 hours.
