First Hatching of Great Indian Bustard through Artificial Insemination
- A Great Indian Bustard chick was born through artificial insemination in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district, marking a significant step in conservation efforts for this critically endangered species.
- Official estimates indicate fewer than 150 Great Indian Bustards remain in the wild, primarily in Rajasthan, with some populations in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.
- The Rajasthan Forest Department established a GIB breeding centre near the Desert National Park as part of the Bustard Recovery Program launched by the Union environment ministry in 2016.
