Threats and Challenges Posed by Space Debris
Space debris, also known as space junk, consists of defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, and fragments from disintegration, erosion, and collisions. This debris orbits Earth at high velocities, posing significant threats to operational spacecraft and satellites.
Major Issues
- Collision Risk: High-speed debris can cause catastrophic damage to active satellites, space stations, and future space missions. Even small fragments can puncture spacecraft.
- Operational Disruptions: Increased debris density complicates satellite operations, requiring more frequent avoidance manoeuvres, which consume fuel and reduce the operational lifespan of satellites.
