Rationale/Causes
- Political Imbalance: A military-bureaucratic oligarchy led by West Pakistan in the 1950s undemocratically controlled the centralised Pakistani state. The Bengalis had no political influence under this regime. But in 1970, at the general elections, West Pakistan's dominance was contested.
- Awami League Wins by a Wide Margin: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman of East Pakistan's Awami League won by a wide margin, giving him the opportunity to become prime minister. West Pakistan, however, was unwilling to allow a ruler from its eastern provincial arm to run the nation.
