​India Assumes Chairmanship of Bay of Bengal Inter-Governmental Organisation

On 22nd February 2025, India took over the chairmanship of the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO) at the 13th Governing Council Meeting in Malé, Maldives, reaffirming its commitment to regional cooperation in fisheries management and marine resource sustainability.

  • India assumed leadership from Bangladesh.
  • Key focus areas for regional cooperation include marine resource management, training & capacity building, research & policy advocacy, and combating Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.
