National Mission on Edible Oil-Oil Palm
On 18th August, 2021, the Union Cabinet, gave its approval to launch a new Mission on Oil palm to be known as the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) to maximize cultivation and production of palm oil in India.
The new scheme will subsume the current National Food Security Mission-Oil Palm program.
Objective
- To harness domestic edible oil prices.
Need
Heavy Dependence on Import
- India consumes about 25 million tonnes of edible oils but domestic production is only about 10.5 million. Thus, India imports about 58% of its consumption.
