World Elephant Day

  • The World Elephant Day is celebrated on 12th August every year to spread awareness for the conservation and protection of the largest mammal on land.
  • It creates awareness of elephant conservation and shares knowledge and positive solutions for the better protection and management of wild and captive elephants.
  • The day was launched in 2012 to bring attention to the urgent plight of Asian and African elephants.

Asian Elephant

  • There are three subspecies of Asian elephant which are the Indian, Sumatran and Sri Lankan.
  • India has 60 per cent of the global population of Asian Elephants.
