India’s Deep Ocean Mission

The ‘Deep Ocean Mission (DOM)’ to be led by the Union Earth Sciences Ministry will commence from October 31. A five-year, Rs. 8,000-crore plan to explore the deepest recesses of the ocean has finally got the green signal from the government.

About the Mission

  • Extract Polymetallic modules: One of the main aims of the mission is to explore and extract polymetallic nodules. These are small potato-like rounded accretions composed of minerals such as manganese, nickel, cobalt, copper and iron hydroxide.
  • Multiple Focus Areas: The Mission will focus on deep-sea mining, ocean climate change advisory services, ....
