Puthandu: Tamil New Year
- Tamil New Year is also known as Varusha pirappu and is observed on first day of Tamil month Chithirai.
- The auspicious occasion of Puthandu is also popularly known as Varusha Pirappu or the birth of New Year and falls on 13th or 14th April according to the Gregorian calendar.
- It is believed that Lord Brahma, the supreme creator, began creation on this day.
- On the eve of Puthandu, a tray with betel leaves, jewellery, coins, flowers, mirror and three fruits – mango, banana, and jackfruit – are laid. This is to be sighted first thing on the morning of Puthandu and this ritual ....
