Remembering Tipu Sultan: The Tiger of Mysore

On 10th November, thousands of people paid tributes to 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan (1750-1799) in Karnataka’s Srirangapatna on his 270th birth anniversary.

About Tipu Sultan

  • Tipu Sultan was born to Hyder Ali and Fatima Fakhr Un NisaasFateh Ali but was often called Tipu after the local saint TipuMastanAulia.
  • He ruled the Kingdom of Mysore from 1782 to 1799.
  • He is credited as the pioneer of rocket technology in India and wrote a military manual, Fathul Mujahidin, which explains the operation of Mysore rockets.
  • With his excellent organisational skills he built a disciplined and loyal army and a robust navy.
