Bougainville Votes to Become World’s Newest Country

Bougainville, an island in the Pacific, held a referendum to decide if it wants to remain a part of Papua New Guinea or become an independent country.

Result of the Referendum

  • According to the result, voters backing Bougainville’s independence from Papua New Guinea won a landslide referendum victory.
